The Gaia mission is a space observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA) designed for astrometry. The spacecraft was launched on December 19, 2013, and reached its operating orbit on July 14, 2014. Gaia is the successor to the Hipparcos mission. The spacecraft is in a Lissajous orbit around the second Lagrangian point of the Earth-Sun system, 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. Its nominal mission duration is five years.
